Ergonomic Order Picking
Ergonomics is becoming an increasingly
important factor in order picking and work environments. The National Institute
for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recommends a 51 pound maximum weight
limit for lifting compact objects.
Maximum product density and pick efficiency are achieved by installing as many
shelves as possible within the optimal pick zone and arranging items according
to their pick frequency.
Picker efficiency improves when pickers are able to memorize slot locations. To
facilitate this recall, we recommend using the same number of shelves per
section, using the same number of slots per shelf, and identifying merchandise
consistently and clearly.
